Sound Wisdom
Creator and musician Jochen Fassbender asks us all: How can we contribute to the harmonization of the world?
It was an extraordinary pleasure to meet and spend time and even dance with Jochen during our first introduction. He is as unbelievably charming, loving and fun as he is a genius in his field of sound.
We first met during a meal at the Sound of Devotion, while in Italy at Grotta Sonora’s Sound Retreat, a few years back. Jochen, a talented, playful, heartfelt human, shared his incredible sound creations and inventive instruments with us all and gifted us his words of wisdom from his big ginormous heart.
German born, Jochen has been working as a sound artist since ‘89 and shares his love of sound, sound innovation and sound play with those who are willing to explore the world of sound and its innate invitation to connect our heart, spirit and beauty of the natural world. Emphasizing that our time in nature is the ignition of genuine feeling, whether we are moving through the intricacies of grief, stoking our ability to play and be curious, or simply being inspired by the sounds, sights and feel of our environment.
“An infinite number of sound worlds are waiting to be discovered by us. Anyone who sets out with open ears will experience that the physical and the spiritual are directly connected. We can learn to perceive the world and ourselves in a new way.” ~Jochen. Fassbender
As sound connoisseurs from around the globe, attending the Sound of Devotion, not only did we have the opportunity to listen to his musical improvisations but we got to explore and play his unique and beautifully crafted instruments - inside the tiny medieval village and outside for as a playful choir in the river of Calcata.
He explains: My sound art always thrives on the fact that I seek connection. Hearing, too, perhaps more than any other sense, always has something connecting about it.
His creations come from the Earth and they sound INCREDIBLE; they are instruments made of stone, glass and metal. Just to list a few: overtone lithophone, hybrid lithophone, octave stone swings, octave gongs, quartz register, quartz plate bells and the quartz miraphone in overtones - sub G. He also creates outdoor play sound installations as well: plate chimes, tubular chimes and a variation of the hybrid lithophones - because he is AMAZING like that!!! He is a gift to all lovers of sound and play!
Thank you Grotta Sonora for bringing us all together!
